About Sales Tax

Sales tax rates differ by state, city, and product category. Adding tax to a listed price prevents surprise at checkout when tags are pre-tax.

Businesses must follow local tax law; this consumer tool approximates tax math for planning.

Not professional tax advice. Currency selection does not perform FX conversion.

How to use this tool

Input pretax amount and tax rate percent. Calculate for tax dollars and total with tax.

Formula & methodology

This sales tax calculator applies the standard relationship below. Intermediate values are kept at full precision; only the displayed result is rounded.

tax = subtotal x (rate/100); total = subtotal + tax

Worked example

A subtotal of 1,200 with 17% sales tax: tax = 1,200 × 0.17 = 204; total = 1,404. To work backwards from a tax-inclusive price, divide by 1.17 instead of subtracting 17%.

Tips for accurate results

  • Some regions tax only part of the basket (groceries exempt, etc.).
  • Use jurisdiction-specific rate tables for accuracy.
  • Tips may or may not be taxed depending on locale—separate from goods tax.
  • Keep receipts for business expense documentation.
