EMI = P x r x (1+r)^n / ((1+r)^n - 1); r = monthly rate, n = months, P = principal
Worked example
A 1,000,000 loan at 12% per year over 5 years: monthly rate r = 0.12 ÷ 12 = 0.01 and n = 60 payments. EMI = P × r × (1 + r)^n ÷ ((1 + r)^n − 1) = 1,000,000 × 0.01 × 1.8167 ÷ 0.8167 ≈ 22,244.45 per month. Total paid over the term is about 1,334,667, of which roughly 334,667 is interest.
