About Running Pace

Running pace expresses time per unit distance—minutes per kilometer or mile—and helps compare workouts and set race targets. It is the inverse of speed.

Knowing pace converts between treadmill settings, track intervals, and road race splits. Elevation and heat adjust perceived effort at the same pace.

CalculatorCamp pace tool turns total time and distance into consistent pace readouts for runners and walkers.

How to use this tool

Enter distance and elapsed time (or use the form fields provided). Calculate to see pace per km and/or mile and related speed if displayed.

Formula & methodology

This running pace calculator applies the standard relationship below. Intermediate values are kept at full precision; only the displayed result is rounded.

pace = total time / distance; speed = distance / total time

Worked example

Running 10 km in 50 minutes: 3000 s ÷ 10 km = 300 s per km, or 5:00 min/km. Per mile that is 300 ÷ 0.621371 ≈ 483 s ≈ 8:02 min/mile, and the average speed is 12.0 km/h.

Tips for accurate results

  • Use GPS watch distance for road runs; tracks for precise lap splits.
  • Negative splits (faster second half) improve many race outcomes.
  • Convert treadmill incline effort separately—pace alone ignores grade.
  • Walk breaks count in total time when calculating average pace.

Frequently asked questions

Pace vs speed?

Pace is time per distance; speed is distance per time—they are reciprocals.

Can I use this for cycling?

You can, but cyclists more often use km/h or mph directly.
