About BMR Calculator

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) estimates calories your body burns at rest to maintain vital functions. It is a starting point for total daily energy needs before activity multipliers.

The Mifflin-St Jeor equation is commonly used for adults and incorporates age, sex, height, and weight. Actual metabolism varies with genetics, hormones, and body composition.

Use BMR as a planning estimate, not a medical test. Consult professionals for clinical nutrition or metabolic disorders.

How to use this tool

Provide age, sex, height, and weight. Calculate to see estimated BMR in calories per day using Mifflin-St Jeor.

Formula & methodology

This bmr calculator (mifflin-st jeor) applies the standard relationship below. Intermediate values are kept at full precision; only the displayed result is rounded.

Men: BMR = 10 x weight(kg) + 6.25 x height(cm) - 5 x age + 5; Women: BMR = 10 x weight(kg) + 6.25 x height(cm) - 5 x age - 161

Worked example

For a 30-year-old man, 70 kg and 175 cm: BMR = 10 × 70 + 6.25 × 175 − 5 × 30 + 5 = 700 + 1093.75 − 150 + 5 = 1648.75, shown as about 1649 kcal/day. For a woman with the same figures the constant is −161 instead of +5, giving about 1483 kcal/day.

Tips for accurate results

  • Compare BMR to TDEE when setting deficits or surpluses.
  • Re-run after significant weight change every few weeks.
  • Very low calorie diets below BMR need medical supervision.
  • Strength training can raise long-term energy needs via lean mass.
